Preset: professional light gray (#EEEEEE). Transparent, white, light blue and custom hex colors all live in the same palette — switch any time before you download.

Best background for a LinkedIn profile picture

LinkedIn renders your photo small and round, so the background has one job: stay out of the way. Three common-sense rules cover almost every profile — no studio, no photographer, no design degree. Think of the background as a picture frame: the right one disappears, the wrong one is all anyone sees.

Light and solid wins

White, light gray and pale blue are the backgrounds recruiters see all day, and they read as clean at thumbnail size. Light neutrals flatter every skin tone, survive LinkedIn's image compression without ugly banding, and never clash with a company logo placed nearby. Darker or saturated backgrounds can suit creative roles, but they demand more from the photo and from the lighting. When in doubt, go light.

Contrast with skin and clothing

The background should separate you from the frame, not absorb you. Dark hair and a navy jacket on a charcoal backdrop merge into one blob at feed size. Aim for clear separation: the lighter your outfit, the deeper the background can afford to be — and the other way around. Light gray sits in the middle of that range, which is why it flatters dark suits and pale shirts alike. A quick squint test on the finished crop tells you whether your outline still reads.

No patterns, no props

Brick walls, bookshelves and office plants all compete with your face, and the circular crop cuts them into distracting fragments. A plain solid color keeps attention where you want it. The same rule applies to digital backgrounds: a subtle gradient is fine, a busy office scene is not. If you love a real location, shoot there anyway — then replace the background instead of letting it stay sharp behind you.

How to change your LinkedIn photo background

Three steps, under a minute, entirely in the browser — nothing to install, and no account needed for a first try. The whole job runs on this page: upload, cutout, color, download.

1

Upload your photo

Drop in a JPG, PNG or WebP up to 10 MB and 50 megapixels. A phone selfie facing a window works well — even light on your face matters more than the camera. The AI cuts out the subject on its own, including flyaway hair. Group shots and heavy shadows on the face are the two cases worth reshooting first.

2

Pick a background color

The result opens on professional light gray, ready for LinkedIn as-is. White and light blue sit in the same 35+ color palette, and a custom hex picker covers exact brand colors. Compare options side by side before you commit.

3

Download and upload to LinkedIn

Export the finished photo and set it as your profile photo on LinkedIn. The free 1024px output already clears LinkedIn's 400×400 minimum; paid plans unlock full-resolution exports for print and other uses. Keep the original file — LinkedIn crops a circle, and you may want the square version elsewhere.

Crop it right for LinkedIn

LinkedIn profile photos are square uploads — at least 400×400 pixels — that the site displays as a circle. Export larger than the minimum and keep your face centered, because the circular mask trims everything near the corners. Those two facts — square in, circle out — drive every cropping decision below.

Square, 400×400 px minimum. Upload bigger — the free 1024px export qualifies — and LinkedIn downscales cleanly; upscaling a small photo is what makes it blurry.

Displayed as a circle. Keep your face centered with a little headroom; anything close to a corner of the square is cropped away in every place the photo appears.

Judge it small. Your photo shows up as a thumbnail in feeds, comments and search results — if it reads clearly at that size, it works everywhere. Zoom out, or check it on your phone, before you upload.
